Rules of Engagement for Taking Nature by John Easterby

Above all, consider both your safty and that of the wildlife you are photographing. keepa safe distance from your subjects and RESPECT their natural spatial needs. If the animal interrupts its behaviour, while resting or feeding, for example, then you are too close and should pull back.

Never force a situation. As with all photography, patience is usually rewarded.

Never crowd, pursue, trap, or make deliberate noises to distract, startle, or harass wildlife.

Never encroach on nests or dens as certain species will abandon their young if their habitat has been tampered with.

Never interfere with animals engaged in breeding, nesting, or caring for young.

Learn to recognize wildlife alarm signals, and never forget that these animals are not tame, no matter how docile or cuddly they appear.

Acquaint youself with and respect the behaviours and ecosystems of the wildlife you may encounter. By doing so, you will enrich your experience tremendously.
